Ezra: Warrior of the Moon

Character Design is complete. Perhaps next time I will do the line art in a nice ink pen because there was too much crap with the graphite pencils. Then again I could keep pushing to make it always clean and sharp crisp lines. Hmmm, challenge, accepted.

Exploration of Ezra

(Text)
Ezra is the younger sister of Elra, Warrior of the Moon. They are twins and share opposite yet conjoint powers from each divine cosmic force. Ezra is a sweet girl, despite her more boyish looks and more so her clearly male name. As are the opposites so are Elra and Ezra, faces identical, styles and personalities clash. She has an athletic, spirited and girly nature. Always one to be happy and bounce about her day in a gentle manner, walking with a playfulness filled with a child's eye. Ezra is very curious and unafraid to go new places or try new things. However she is a warrior. She fights for justice and the harmony of the worlds that are cascaded by the moonlight's stretch. A trained fighter, a good one even, goes against her wishes. She would rather not fight but so little is the case for her to deviate away from it. She is keen on finishing quickly, she needs reason to fight, and most of all is her values. She feels that she should fear her own power, that it should never be her confidence, for it becomes that, the power may consume her, and lead her astray.

(Image) Ezra was originally one character, she was the lone fighter who was solemn and cool-headed, however her dress contrasted too much, breaking her into two. Ezra and Elra.
Further Exploration of Ezra's Proportions and Personality Definition

I used some of Preston Blair's owl and rabbit poses to get a feel for a springy kind of coocoo feeling out of her.

Proportioning

As you can see I made her 7 heads tall, keeping her chest a 1/2 head to a head smaller than her legs. She has more of a child-like body that very toned and full. There isn't much curve except for the fleshy parts and she doesn't really have breasts.

She has three main pieces of hair, very down-droopy round eyes like Rukia Kuchiki's from Bleach by Tite Kubo.

Final Product
Managed to fit them in a neat arrangement onto two pages featuring one profile, one 3/4 back and a lot of 3/4 fronts (lol). *Note: If you saw them on the computer you'd always wish for much cleaner lines that a graphite pencil does not always give. But yay for printers that sorta fill that in for you :P

This being done, I wish to do the same thing for her sister Elra. I'm very fond of these two and hope to make them very stable, amicable characters that people might recognize me for. Cheers and I hope everyone is doing as well or is happy with their work as I am! :)

Girls and Eggs

Painting Assignment 1 - Gray to Colour and Value
Man, he changed it up on us again. At the end he was like there should still be value but flat no blending.... No it said flat application, depth shown in solids. GAH whatever, the first one is different from the other two because I had originally composed as noted in my thumbnails she would be off centre, but I seemed to have miscalculated. I just redrew each scene instead of using a transfer type idea with one copy of the final layout. Either way, I was very happy with teh trees in the background on the lft hand side. Felt so much going on, and the contrast levels with the mid tones neatly in the back.

Value version, I like the layout the best in this version, the proportions work well and the fluidity is nice. Felt like you were stealing a moment of watching the girl statue dance under her spell releasing moonlight

I chose a pthalo blue to emote the sad, gloomy, desperate feel of the dance. A beauteous soul entrapped in a statue, only free to dance her dreams awake under the pale cascades of night's grace. The proportions got funny but the application of paint made the image so much more impactful than the first two. This has much more depth and contract that makes your eyes get dragged all over to understand it all.

Thumbnails, top was a Hobbit house in the Shire from Lord of the Rings.
After is a bunch of exterior gardenesque scenes save for the lsat one where it was a wooded forest.

Tonal study of the image for value
Seconds Painting Assignment: Rendering an Sphere Form

I had originally wanted to do an egg but during painting the shape was more beautiful as a sphere. So I transformed it. Same ideas applied to the shape as studied in the thumbnails. Combining the first two to achieve the final lighting arrangment.
Unfortunately when I was taking the tape off the original, it had ripped part of the painting. From far away its barely noticeable but it does make you sad when you see the gruesome little tear :(
The shadow is a bit funny but I think it was a rather successful ball. I took me a while to understand how to create the appearance of it being a downcast view with the light above and angled on it.  But I like it, and found the two hours I took to this quite enjoyable!

Absinthe Dragas Bar

First layout assignment was staging. The original drawing was mentioned in a post earlier. This is Klaes in a bar called the Absinthe Dragas which is basically a dragon egg den, trading, breeding, fighting and more.  Klaes is not impressed with the entire scene and general musings of the crowd, like he is bored with the world he created.

Greyscale Rendering
I think it was successful in colouring, but not so much in gray. Well next time better to just do it all gray in the first place haha.

Pendulum & Balloon Test

Wee a very plain pendulum, sadly I won't create a background for this at the moment. Perhaps when all the mad rush of things being due I will do one for fun.

I did this with 16 frames at 24 fps.

Slice of Life....

Here it is! My ultra large post of what has happened so far since Friday :) This was a nice fun, easy, quick doodle under drawing 5 minutes an then spent and hour of just inking for fun as I loved the scene so much. It was supposed to be for Mark Komza's class where we had to draw a character in partial environment. I might have gone too detailed for the project.

I'm not quite sure what I will name him yet, but he has a very sordid and mysterious past that he neither confirms or denies. Everything about him is aloof and what is spoken is assumed. He's probably shy of the age of 28 and is well-spoken in this maniacal sounding voice, the is deeper than the ocean.

(Full Body) Perhaps his name shall be
Klaes (Clay-es) Russenoix (Rew-sen-nwah).

Now for some Life Drawing with the wonderfully charismatic Mark Thurman!
And the equally wonderful model, Ed.

Drawing Slumps

After coming home, and doodling some stuff for layout class, I couldn't get into the groove of character making. I think I'm still kind of behind and just need to draw more to really be comfortable with a reliable style to get my cartoon's going. Aside from that, I did this as soon as I got the sketchbook from Curry's:

I got this image off of tumblr:

And decided to do a 4-(coloured) page rendition of this gorgeous black and white of this woman.

Not quite finished but hopefully will be done this weekend!

Next up is when I was feeling really out of my element I couldn't sleep and ended up revisiting another sketchbook where just the faintest lines of an idea lay. Glad I kept that page instead of tearing it up so that I could end up with this work in progress. I'm contemplating on shortening her legs so that it looks more proportionate or whether I want to really stylize her into a mannerist genre of lengthy legs.

( I apologize ahead of time for the bad camera phone images, and when I go back to Hamilton this weekend I will bring in my scanner, which really isn't ALL that much better, but should help when there is no sun to take a better photograph and incandescent lighting does not do justice too.)

I have named her Irina Lysle

Oh my goodness it's back and up and running again. Well actually I didn't really try to see if it was up again, however, I was thoroughly upset when I wanted to make a massive post that it was down for 'maintenance' or so I am assuming. However today is May 21 and the days are just rolling along, time is moving quickly and soon the tides of new water will creep in September.

I really am happy I got into Animation and I am hoping with all my heart it is what I love to do. I only know of it what I have seen and searched for it myself. Sometimes I feel like such a phony going in there because I don't know anything. I don't have a precursor to what is to come, and the fact I don't hunt down new artists, or watch new and innovating shorts frequently kind of makes me scared. However I do feel that school is made for learning and there I shall learn to love what I have chosen.

Having said that, I am drawing a bit in my sketchbook and produced a couple useable sketches. I've scanned them and now I am going to digitally colour them. Here's to using an ancient program and no way to get intouch with using photoshop, and nor do I want to just use the trial of Sai, fall in love with it and then not have it! I'm also getting really anxious about whether or not I will get OSAP (student loans) O_O, eeep.

Amongst all of this I have purchased Pokemon White. This is the first pokemon game I have ever actually owned/played. So this is pretty exciting! I've been sucked into the world of tall grass and a vide variety of pokeballs. I love it, and to be honest, my favourite is the grass pokemon, Lilligant. I don't know why but Giga Drain is just kicked all their butts. :D (But, I would always choose a fire starter!)

Other than pokemon, I've bought a volleyball and pads. I've become quite taken with the sport and hopefully want to practice a lot to get better and hopefully get a little more cardio strength, perhaps even loose some weight or tone my bodddddy. That would super. Super, I tell you.

Besides being on Tumblr 24/7, refreshing a not so happening Facebook page and loading a bunch of Card Captor Sakura episodes, I find myself hanging out with Aaron quite a bit. Yay! Yes and no to this. I love love love love love love love love love spending time with my man, but I understand how he's feeling about not having anything to do. It's super hard to get a job these days :/ Beyond that we watched THOR last night. 4/5 for me. Some minor things bothered me, but I liked it. We watched it in 3D and I guess my biggest complaint are the fight scenes. Nauseating and I can't tell what's going on...... I have glasses, so to wear the 3D glasses over mine make it difficult. And we sat kind of close to the screen so everything was tiring (looking up, holding the glasses up, neck getting cramped when I was in one position for too long...)

^ This guy played Thor, and for an actor I have never seen before he was pretty good. He didn't make me dislike his character, you know when the person can ruin it? And holy crap, Natalie Portman!, has just been in every movie this year! From Black Swan to Your Highness to No Strings Attached annnnd now Thor. She's what's going on right now and I think I will draw her. (When I have the chance, I need to get my act together and be more efficient in drawing :P )

Besides all of this, here is what I am currently working on! Practicing some colouring. Although I know it's all too much for animation at the moment. I can't seem to break out of this proportionate human thing. Good and bad. But I definitely need to make some more dynamic characters! I did make this roboarm kitty... I'll scan that in later. She's megamanesque.

^ I'm using Open Canvas 1.1. Quite prehistoric, quite frustrating. But maybe with all the simpleness I can get something done? Who am I kidding, I wish to get new program, STAT.

Cheers, I can't think of anything to write about right now, and even if I do I think you are all tired of reading this currently :)

Goodnight.
